Traditional canoe families from various tribes will land at Fort Worden State Park as part of the 2026 Paddle to Medicine Creek Nisqually Potlatch. Up to 20 canoes and 1,000 people will participate in ceremonial songs and dances, asking permission to come ashore. The event is a sacred Coast Salish ceremony with a public viewing area and an information booth.

People of the River, People of the Grass Our people lived in the south Puget Sound watershed long before 1833, when Fort Nisqually was established as the first white settlement on Puget Sound. The Nisqually people came north from the Great Basin, across the Cascade Mountains, to settle near the Mashel River.
