Serena Chopra and Jane Wong discuss writing family stories that deal with trauma, immigration, and loss, using poetry and memoir. They talk about how craft shapes content in narratives about diaspora and family distance. This conversation is at Hugo House.

  • Serena Chopra

    Serena Chopra is a writer, dancer, filmmaker, and performance artist. She has a PhD in creative writing from the University of Denver and has received support from the NEA, MacDowell, Kundiman, and Fulbright. She is the author of This Human, Ic, and A Catalog of Future Mercies.

  • Jane Wong

    Jane Wong is the author of Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City, a memoir (Tin House, 2023). She is also the author of two books of poetry: How to Not Be Afraid of Everything (Alice James, 2021) and Overpour (Action Books, 2016). She is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Asian American Studies at Western Washington University and also serves as faculty at Randolph College’s low-residency MFA program.
