On the first Thursday of September, the Volunteer Park Conservatory opens its doors free to everyone. This 1912 Victorian greenhouse on Capitol Hill holds five rooms of tropical plants, palms, and cacti—a genuinely pleasant way to spend an afternoon if you like being around green things and don't want to pay for it.
