Born Patricia Louise Holte in Philadelphia in 1944, she rose to fame in the 1960s as lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, and later achieved mainstream success with the group Labelle, whose 1974 hit 'Lady Marmalade' became a number-one single.
