The History of Japanese Shakuhachi with Hanzaburo Araki
Hanzaburo Araki walks through the history and technique of the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, with talk and live demonstration at Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum in Pike Place Market on September 9th. If you've ever wondered what that haunting flute sound actually is or how someone gets music out of a piece of bamboo, this is the straightforward answer.

  • Hanzaburo Araki

    Araki Kodo VI, born Hanzaburo Araki, is the head of the Kodo-kai Shakuhachi Guild and the sixth generation of the only Kinko-Ryu shakuhachi lineage to date back to Kurosawa Kinko. The youngest child of Tatsuya (Kodo V/Chikuo II) and Charlotte Araki, Hanzaburo (Hanz) made his professional debut in 1988 in Shimonoseki, Japan where he was given the name Baikyoku.
