Adrienne Matthews

Adrienne Matthews is a visual artist and writer working across painting, collage, and narrative forms. Her practice engages archives, portraiture, and abstraction to explore how systems of care, discipline, aspiration, and visibility shape Black interior life across generations. Drawing from African American history, family archives, and personal memory, Matthews examines social mobility as a lived condition, tracing how race, class, and gender shape the stakes of ambition, work, and arrival. Her work explores intimacy, abstraction, and forms of interiority that exceed the limits of documentation. Through layered collage, painting, and archival imagery, Matthews approaches the archive as both historical record and living system, where social history and lived experience converge. Matthews holds a BA with Honors from Spelman College in African Diaspora literature, art, and visual culture, and an MBA from the University of Washington. Her work is held in private and institutional collections. She lives and works between Amsterdam and Seattle.Instagram
