Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE is an English filmmaker and stage director born in 1965. Known for his innovative treatments of classic stage productions including Cabaret, Oliver!, and Company, as well as acclaimed films like American Beauty (1999), for which he won an Academy Award, and 1917 (2019).
