Deana Lawson

Deana Lawson (b. 1979, Rochester, New York) is an American photographer and artist based in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. She creates large-scale staged photographs exploring Black identity, intimacy, family, spirituality, and collective memory through richly composed portraits. A leading contemporary photo-based artist, Lawson was the first photographer to win the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize from the Guggenheim Museum and received the 2022 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.
