Rei Kawakubo
Rei Kawakubo is a self-taught Japanese fashion designer born in 1942 in Tokyo, known for her avant-garde and deconstructed aesthetic through her high-fashion label Comme des Garçons, founded in 1969. Her iconoclastic vision—featuring dark, oversized, asymmetrical garments that challenged conventional notions of beauty—made her one of the most influential designers of the late 20th century. Based in Tokyo and Paris, she is also the founder of Dover Street Market and was only the second living designer to have a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Browse all performers
