Howard Kottler
Howard Kottler (1930–1989) was an American ceramist and conceptual artist who became a seminal force in redefining contemporary American ceramic art. Influenced by the Bay Area funk art movement, he is best known for his innovative series of decal plates that rejected traditional handmade ceramics in favor of mass-produced store-bought plates decorated with appropriated images from popular culture to convey political, social, and personal messages. His work, characterized by coded imagery, wordplay, and biting humor, established him as a satirist who taught at the University of Washington and whose pieces are now held in major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and the Whitney Museum.Browse all performers
