avery r. young is an interdisciplinary artist, poet, and composer from Chicago's West Side who blends poetry, music, visual art, and performance. Known for his work examining Black American history and culture through blues, funk, gospel, and soul, he served as Chicago's inaugural Poet Laureate (2023-2025) and is the composer and librettist of the opera safronia premiering at Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2026.
