Mercury Rev is an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in Buffalo, New York, by University at Buffalo students initially inspired by minimalist composer Tony Conrad. The band evolved from experimental psychedelic noise rock on early albums like Yerself is Steam (1991) and Boces (1993) into purveyors of lush, orchestral indie pop with their breakthrough album Deserter's Songs (1998), featuring acclaimed tracks like 'Holes' and 'Goddess on a Hiway.'
