Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a Russian composer of the Romantic period and the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting international impression. He is best known for his ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, as well as his symphonies, concertos, and operas including Eugene Onegin. His music is characterized by tuneful melodies, impressive harmonies, and colorful orchestration that evoke profound emotional responses.
