On Thursday, July 1st, head to the Ballard Locks to watch salmon navigate their way upstream through the fish ladder—a genuinely compelling bit of nature if you can catch the timing right. The locks themselves are worth seeing (a historic engineering setup connecting freshwater lakes to Puget Sound), and the grounds include a botanical garden and visitor center with exhibits on the migration. It's free and works fine for families.Recurs: July through August at Ballard Locks, and October along the Cedar River
